The Treasure of Berzocana, in the Congress of History of Archeology

The team will participate in the Fifth International Congress on the History of Archeology, dedicated in this edition to Archeology of museums: 150 years of the creation of the National Archaeological Museum (MAN), to be held in Madrid between 21-23 March. The title of the intervention, signed by Ignacio Pavón, David M. Duque and Alonso Rodríguez, is "The Treasure of Berzocana: a new reading of its discovering and context". Berzocana's Treasure, deposited in the MAN,  and appeared unintentionally in 1961 and it is formed by two massif gold torques and a bronze bowl. The jewels are considered main examples of the goldwork in Final Bronze in the Atlantic peninsular area and the bronze bowl is a testimony from precolonian Mediterranean contacts. In this paper there is a original reading of the intricate history of this discovery and management, included the details of the sale in Navalmoral de la Mata of a missing third gold piece and the trip without return of the treasure to Madrid in 1964. Likewise, it is provided an alternative proposal in the place of the finding. All of that is based on the information recovered in several files, oral testimonies and the fieldwork.
