Archaeological excavations in Logrosán. 2016 Campaign

Between 13th June  and 15th July  2016, a new archaeological campaign will be carried out at the site Cerro de San Cristóbal (Logrosán, province of Cáceres). The work will focus on the western side of the mountain, where the Protohistoric archaeological remains are located. In this campaign, on the one hand, a geo-archaeological trench will be made in order to detect new evidences of ancient mining workings and, on the other hand, squares will be excavated in areas not affected by the 1950’s decade mining rush, with the objective of getting a better knowledge of the characteristics of this settlement specialized in the benefit of cassiterite between the 9th/8th to the 7th century B.C.  The 2016 archaeological campaign is co-financed by the Project  HAR2014-52922-P del Plan Nacional I+D del MINECO (LOGROTIN) and by the city council of Logrosán  (Ayuntamiento de Logrosán). Related EPO´s entities are Minas de Logrosán and the Geoparque Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark.About ten workers contracted by the Logrosán Town hall, four post-graduate students and graduate students from the University of Extremadura will participate in the field work. The technical team is formed by Alonso Rodríguez, Ignacio Pavón, David M. Duque (University of Extremadura), Moisés Ponce de León (University of Rennes) and Mark A. Hunt Ortiz (University of Seville, who directed the 2013 excavation campaign).
